Helping Hugs.....

Almost every child and parent can feel overwhelmed or scared when it comes to injections.  I have learned one tip that helped my child overcome his fears and made it so much easier for him.  A hug.  All you need to do is have an extra person around when it is time for injections. If the injection is to be given in the arm, the "hugger" will simply hug the child as normal but place their arm over the arm that will be receiving the injection.  This helps hold the arm still but also makes the child feel safe.  If the injection is to be given in the leg, the "hugger" will simply sit down with the child on their lap and then hug.  When doing a leg injection hug, the child can either sit with their legs off to the site or wrapped around the "hugger's" waist.  In younger children it is recommended that the legs go aroung the waist.  This will help the "hugger" to hold the leg still.  If I learn of any new techniques to help your child, I will update the site.

When Having A Low.....

Another tip that I have learned is to keep cake icing with you wherever you go.  It doesn't matter if it is the squeeze kind or the big "tub" of icing.  When a blood sugar gets low, one bite if the cake icing can raise the blood sugar level up and quickly.  I prefer the squirt tube.  It is easier beacuse if the child ends up falling asleep, all you have to do is squirt a little in their mouth without worrying about them being able to take it off the spoon.  I am a little afraid to use the glucagon in the event that I need to and a friend of mine who is an RN told me about the cake icing.

If you have any useful tips please feel free to post them in the forum with your name so that we may add it to the site.

Thank you!!
